IPSA WELCOMES THE ASSOCIATION OF POLITICAL SCIENCE OF PARAGUAY

It’s a great pleasure to announce that the Association of Political Science of Paraguay (ACIPP) has joined IPSA as a collective member organization.

The Committee on Participation and Membership recommended the ACIPP’s candidacy at the last IPSA Executive Committee meeting (No. 134), which was held virtually on 20-21 November 2020. The Executive Committee went on to formally accept ACIPP’s candidacy.

The Association of Political Science of Paraguay thus becomes the 60th collective member of IPSA, and it will be a voting member at the next IPSA Council, to be held in conjunction with the 2021 World Congress of Political Science in Lisbon, Portugal.

IPSA warmly welcomes ACIPP and extends its best wishes for success to political scientists in Paraguay.

1. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to dominate the political and research agenda, as countries work to control the spread of the disease and roll out a safe vaccine. The Pew Research Centre’s new section on Coronavirus Disease (COVID 19) aims to inform the public about the far-reaching impacts of the pandemic. One of the latest articles reports on a July 2020 Pew survey intended to assess the readiness of adult Americans to participate in contact tracing by observing three steps: speaking, sharing and quarantining. Although 93% of people said they would quarantine if told they had coronavirus, 41% stated that they would be unlikely to speak to a health official by phone if contacted, and 27% stated that they would not be comfortable providing the names of people they had contact with, nor would they be comfortable providing the names of the places they had been. The article also triangulates the results with education level and political loyalty (Research Institute on the IPSAPortal).

2. New Maps are published by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) every Thursday. The country overview maps provide detailed and downloadable data on the latest pandemic developments in EU countries and the UK. The surveillance report presents epidemiological characteristics of reported Covid cases and accesses data, including on testing rates, duration of contagion peaks, affected age groups, hospitalizations as well as ICU occupancy rates and cases. The report also covers coronavirus-related issues in Europe and looks at how different countries are affected (Institutions on the IPSAPortal).

3. The EUR-lex website is a well-organized site with a straightforward search engine that offers access to key documents detailing pan-European efforts to fight COVID-19, including health protocols, roadmaps for the resumption of travel and tourism, and a common EU toolbox for the use of technology and mobile data. An automatic search launch on COVID-19 related documents is also available, based on year, collection, type of act, author and type of procedure (Official Records on IPSAPortal).

4. Discord came onto the scene in 2015 as a chat app for video gamers and quickly became one of the hottest startups in Silicon Valley, with 45 million members. It has privacy and anonymity, invitation-only features that attracted white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups, which used the platform to plot strategy and organize events. Mainstream tech platforms like Twitter and Facebook are often used by activist groups for recruiting and public broadcasting, and tech companies such as Discord question their responsibility for content posted in private groups-at least until Charlottesville highlighted the real issues behind the absence of platform control. Now banned from Discord, the alt-right, like other extremist groups, will find another space: “Moderation on the Internet is an endless cat-and-mouse game” (Media Sources on the IPSAPortal).
