Theme: Democratization and the military
This is a general invitation for papers for the conference on democratization and the military to be held at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, organized by Research Committee 44 (RC44) of the International Political Science Association. The conference will provide a forum for discussions on a number of issues including:
the changing role of the military in politics
the democratic oversight of the military
military as guardian of democracy
militarization of the state
authoritarianism, democracy and the role of the military
the role of the military in constitutional and state reform
civil-military relations
the role of the military in peace-building
the military and human security
militarization of democracy promotion
peace-keeping and the military
disaster relief, emergency powers and the military
the military and internal repression
resistance and people power
militarism as an ideology
democratic education, indoctrination and the military
the military, propaganda and the media
relationship between military coercion and democratic hegemony
the military and migration (militarization of humanitarian crises and border controls)
military conflict and refugees
military, democracy and marginalization
gender, democratization and the military
indigenous rights and militarism
military justice, human rights and war crimes
military occupation (military government, civil affairs)
overseas military deployment
the military, language and intercultural communication
democracy and nuclear weapons (democratic control, nuclear proliferation and abolition)
military technology and democratization
terrorism and the military
privatization of the military
corporate interest and military-industrial complex
neo-colonialism and militarization
post-colonial democracy and military rule
developmental states and the military
We invite papers related to any of these areas or any aspect of democratization and the military not covered above. It is envisaged that the papers will attempt to provide a wide and comparative prism of the different regions of the world (Americas, Africa, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Pacific) as well as the unique circumstances of different countries and specific situations.
As much as you can, try to incorporate the theme of the 2018 Brisbane Congress, “Borders and Margins,” into your presentation. The papers can be based on theoretical discourse, empirical case studies, comparative analysis between regions or countries or critical narrative and reflection of an ongoing situation. We also welcome interdisciplinary approaches that include other areas of study including history, geography, international relations, international law, philosophy, sociology, indigenous studies, cultural studies, feminist and gender studies, queer perspectives, security studies, anthropology, sociolinguistics, development studies, psychology and economics. We hope to publish the papers in a special journal issue.
Abstracts of about 300 words should be submitted through the form on the conference webpage (https://sites.google.com/site/ipsarc44/our-projects/other-projects/ipsa-rc44-2017- in-christchurch-nz). Only if you are unable to submit through the entry form, you may send your abstracts to the RC44 interim secretary, Radomir Compel, Nagasaki University (cmplrad@nagasaki-u.ac.jp). The abstracts will be accepted from Dec 1, 2016 and we encourage you to send us your early responses before that (on the same website). The deadline for abstracts is January 31, 2017 and the deadline for the final papers is June 10, 2017.
