Workshop “Networks in Global Environmental Governance”, Brussels, 16-17 May 2014

Analytical theme

Global environmental governance is characterized by a decentralized structure and a norm of open participation. As a result of this institutional and normative context, several transnational networks are active in the field of environment, including advocacy networks, experts networks, bureaucratic networks, criminal networks, business networks, and indigenous communities networks. The workshop will discuss papers that provide original contributions on the study of networks, understood either as agents or structures, in global environmental governance. Papers are expected to be conceptually innovative and empirically convincing. Proposals relying on social network analysis, studying the flow of idea within network, investigating inter-network interactions, or looking at relations between networks and regime complexes are especially welcome. 

 

Workshop format

This workshop is part of the WIRE series (Workshops on International Relations, see www.wire-series.org). As for previous WIRE editions, the number of participants will be limited to twenty, full papers will be distributed long before the event, and authors will speak only at the closure of the one-hour group discussion of their paper. This format offers an opportunity for extensive and in-depth discussions, provide authors with detailed feedback on their on-going research, and allow participants to get acquainted in an informal setting.

 

Submission of proposals

To submit a proposal, send a one-page summary and a biographical notice by email at wire.series@gmail.com by 13th October 2013. Authors will be informed by the selection committee of its decision by 21st October. Selected candidates are expected to send a complete version of their paper (no more than 8.000 words references included) by 15th April 2014 at the latest. Unfortunately, due the format of the workshop, authors who fail to send their paper on time will be removed from the program.

 

Funding opportunities

There is no registration fee. Meals and accommodation during the workshop will be covered for all participants. Upon request, we will also provide financial assistance for travel costs. 

 

Publication

The organizers intend to publish a selection of papers in a leading journal of the field. Previous WIRE editions have led to special issues in Global Governance, Cooperation and Conflict, the British Journal of Politics and International Relations, and International Studies Review.
